Euro commissioner Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella stated the most important opportunities for water in the circular economy are about reusing municipal wastewater. In his speech during the opening of the international water week in Amsterdam and Aquatech he focused on quick wins for water. Besides reusing municipal water, Vella mentioned more efficient irrigation and reusing industrial water.

“National resources are finite”, said the Euro commissioner to the international water experts. “Due to increased water pollution and an increasing demand of water we have to start reusing water. We also need to address the barriers and we have to tackle them. “ Vella referred to the European Innovation Partnership on Water as a potential supplier of innovative solutions. “We need a sustainable and profound transformation in Europe and water will have a central role to play.”
