EU invests in Romanian water infrastructure

The European Commission approved an investment of more than € 127 million from the Cohesion Fund to solve water supply problems in the county of Buzău in Romania. The project will upgrade 13 water supply systems, create 57 water sources extraction points, lay 16 kilometres of sewage collectors and 430 kilometres of sewerage network pipes. In total, 170,392 inhabitants will benefit from the water and wastewater network upgrades.

According to Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms this is tackling local challenges. “The project will save water, give citizens access to clean water and also create new jobs during its implementation phase.” The upgrades of the system will strengthen the local water network’s compliance with the EU Drinking Water Directive and Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD).

Buzău

The county of Buzău is named after a river in eastern Romania, atributary of the river Siret. Its total length is 302 km, and its drainage basin area is 5,264 km2. Its source is in the south-eastern Carpathian Mountains, east of Brașov. The Buzău flows through four Romanian counties Brașov, Covasna, Buzău and Brăila. In Buzau water is managed by the local water company Compania de Apa Buzau. They are responsible for the implementation of the project.  

Water investments

Over the years Europe has been investing in the water and wastewater infrastructure in Romania. In 2019 they allocated 355 million euros to waterworks in the counties of Cluj and Salaj.  Another project will improve the water infrastructure in the Turda-Câmpia Turzii area, where another 150 million euros will be invested in fifteen localities.
